Whole barley that has had the outer bran removed is known as pearl barley. Since pearl barley doesn't need to be pre-soaked, it cooks a little bit faster than pot barley because the outside is removed. It is the perfect addition to soups and stews because of this. Although not as high as pot barley, pearl barley has a significant level of fiber.
